Electric Bus Market Strategy: What Procurement Teams Should Know Now
The Electric Bus Market was valued at USD 49.81 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach USD 110.44 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 12.1% from 2024 to 2030.
- 2024 estimate: USD 55.58 billion
- Leading region (2023): Asia Pacific, with a 91.44% revenue share
- Leading type (2023): Battery electric vehicles, with a 67.6% revenue share
Market Size and Growth
The global Electric Bus Market was worth USD 49.81 billion in 2023 and is estimated at USD 55.58 billion in 2024. At a 12.1% CAGR, revenue should reach USD 110.44 billion by 2030. That adds roughly USD 60.6 billion in annual revenue over the forecast window, and 2030 revenue would be more than double the 2023 base.
The Volume Gap Behind the Value Story
Volume tells a more cautious story. According to International Energy Agency data cited in the report, nearly 50,000 electric buses were sold worldwide in 2023, only 3% of total bus sales, which lifted the global stock to around 635,000 units. Yet China, Norway, Belgium and Switzerland posted electric sales shares above 50%. Canada, the Netherlands, Chile, Finland, Portugal, Poland and Sweden each exceeded one-fifth.
That spread suggests the Electric Bus Market is no longer waiting on technology. The constraint is how quickly other countries can copy the procurement and policy conditions that the leaders already have.
Segments That Carry the Revenue
Battery electric vehicles held a 67.6% share in 2023, helped by lower charging costs than diesel or gasoline fueling. Fuel cell electric buses are expected to grow significantly from 2024 to 2030 as hydrogen programs expand.
Battery chemistry follows a similar split. Lithium iron phosphate led in 2023 because of its thermal stability and safety record. Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide is projected to grow strongly, since it supports longer range on shorter charges.
By application, intracity routes led in 2023, while intercity is expected to grow faster. VE Commercial Vehicles’ intercity electric bus, launched in January 2023, covers up to 500 kilometers using depot charging plus 30 to 40 minutes of opportunity charging. By end use, public transport led, and the private segment is projected to grow significantly.

Regional Breakdown
Asia Pacific: Dominant but Maturing
Asia Pacific captured 91.44% of global revenue in 2023, which leaves under 9% for every other region combined. China, the production and consumption leader, is forecast to grow at 11.5% from 2024 to 2030. That is slightly below the global 12.1%, which fits a market that has already scaled.
The faster growth is happening elsewhere in the region. India is expected to post the highest CAGR in the region. In August 2023 it launched the PM eBus Sewa Scheme, with USD 2.4 billion to deploy 10,000 electric buses across about 169 cities. Delhi separately contracted GreenCell Mobility for 570 electric buses in January 2023. Japan is also forecast to grow at a considerable rate.

North America: Funding-Led Acceleration
The U.S. Electric Bus Market is forecast to grow at 17.5% from 2024 to 2030, the highest figure the report gives for any named country. School buses drive much of it. In January 2024 the EPA selected 67 applicants for nearly USD 1 billion through its Clean School Bus Program. Canada is expected to record the fastest CAGR in the region.
Europe and the Middle East & Africa
Europe is projected to grow at 14.3%. The U.K. is expected to post the highest regional CAGR after investing GBP 143 million in March 2024 to roll out almost a thousand zero-emission buses in England. Germany is also forecast to grow at a notable rate. On the supply side, Alexander Dennis launched its Enviro400EV double-decker and Enviro100EV small bus in November 2023, and Qbuzz ordered 54 battery electric buses for Groningen and Drenthe.
The Middle East & Africa is forecast at 13.3%, driven by urbanization and population growth. Saudi Arabia is expected to see moderate growth.
Three regions are projected to outgrow the global rate (the U.S., Europe, MEA), while China sits just below it. Future growth is therefore shifting toward the West and emerging markets.
Key Drivers and Challenges
What Is Pushing Adoption
Electric buses emit nothing from the tailpipe and run more quietly than diesel models, which improves passenger comfort and driver awareness. Government funding is the strongest accelerator. Schools are a concentrated buyer group looking for cleaner transport for children.
Manufacturers are also launching new models at a high rate. Volvo Buses introduced the Volvo 8900 Electric in March 2024 for intercity, commuter and city use. Karsan launched its e-JEST right-hand drive minibus in Japan in December 2023.
What Holds It Back
The main barriers are high upfront costs and complex charging infrastructure. Electric buses cost significantly more than conventional ones, and depot charging adds further investment. Growing incentives are expected to narrow that gap.
Simple division of the program figures shows how large the support is. India’s allocation works out to roughly USD 240,000 per bus, and the U.K. figure to roughly GBP 143,000 per bus. These are our estimates, not figures from the report. They suggest the price gap is being closed by procurement design rather than by technology alone.
Who Competes
The report lists BYD, AB Volvo, Proterra, MAN, Nissan, Ashok Leyland, Daimler Truck, Zhengzhou Yutong Bus, Tata Motors and Hyundai as the leading players. The report also notes that there are no direct substitutes for electric buses, though diesel, gas and hybrid buses remain alternatives. Competition therefore centers on battery performance, charging speed and range, and the report describes the sector as highly innovative.
