Disposable Endoscopes Market Restraints: Infrastructure Gaps and Specialist Shortages

The global disposable endoscopes market was valued at USD 3.0 billion in 2025. Grand View Research projects it will reach USD 3.4 billion in 2026 and USD 8.0 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 12.9%. Infection prevention, minimally invasive care and a steady flow of regulatory clearances are moving single-use endoscopy from a niche alternative toward a mainstream choice.

Key Market Differentiators

Infection control comes first. Concerns about hospital-acquired infections, and contamination linked to improperly reprocessed reusable scopes, are the central growth driver. The FDA has recommended single-use devices for high-risk procedures such as duodenoscopy and bronchoscopy, which pushes hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers toward disposables.

Lower reprocessing burden. Reusable scopes carry ongoing costs for cleaning, repairs and staff training. The report puts reusable scopes at roughly USD 1,400 to 1,900 per procedure once maintenance and sterilization are included. Single-use scopes typically range from USD 400 to 1,900 per procedure, depending on circumstances. Skipping reprocessing also helps facilities with limited sterilization infrastructure.

A steady pipeline of launches and approvals. Recent examples include Ambu’s FDA clearances for the aScope 5 Uretero (June 2024) and aScope 5 Cysto HD (June 2025), Olympus’s RenaFlex single-use ureteroscope (April 2024), and PENTAX Medical’s ONE Pulmo bronchoscope with HD imaging.

A supportive environment. Patient preference for minimally invasive procedures, favorable reimbursement in developed countries and public investment in healthcare infrastructure all add momentum.

The main challenge. Some clinicians still question whether disposables match premium reusable systems on image quality, maneuverability, suction and precision in complex procedures. Long familiarity with reusable platforms also slows purchasing decisions.

Market Landscape Comparison

By region

  • North America is the largest market, with a 40.6% revenue share in 2025. Drivers include a large number of market players, early FDA approvals, high per-capita health spending and strong coverage.
  • Europe is the fastest-growing region. Infection-risk awareness, a rising cancer and chronic disease burden, and early-diagnosis initiatives such as those in the UK support demand.
  • Asia Pacific is expected to see significant growth, helped by a large patient population, improving infrastructure and a shift from reusable to disposable scopes. India is drawing attention, for example with the debut of the PillBot capsule endoscopy device.
  • Latin America is expected to grow considerably as healthcare spending and infrastructure investment rise, with Brazil a key market.
  • Middle East & Africa is also expected to grow considerably, supported by chronic disease burden, expanding reimbursement and GCC investment in healthcare.

By end-use and product

  • Hospitals lead end-use with a 64.0% share, while outpatient facilities are the fastest-growing segment.
  • Gastrointestinal endoscopes lead by product with a 33.3% share, while laparoscopes are the fastest-growing segment.

By competitor profile

  • Mature players such as Olympus rely on global reach, broad portfolios and heavy innovation investment, often expanding through M&A. Their risk is keeping pace in a fast-moving, regulation-heavy market.
  • Emerging players such as Verathon focus on R&D, partnerships and portfolio expansion, with an established local presence. Limited capital and brand-building are their main hurdles.

Other leading companies include Ambu A/S, Boston Scientific, PENTAX Medical (HOYA), FUJIFILM, Karl Storz, CooperSurgical, OTU Medical, Flexicare, Arthrex and STERIS. Partnerships are common. Olympus signed a 2025 global distribution agreement with MacroLux for single-use urology products, and PENTAX Medical collaborated with Jiangsu Vedkang on disposable therapeutic products.

Core Clinical Applications

Gastroenterology. GI endoscopes lead the market, driven by colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and other chronic conditions that need regular diagnostic procedures. A 2022 randomized noninferiority trial reported that disposable gastroscopes performed comparably to reusable ones. Duodenoscopes for ERCP are a particular focus because of infection risk.

Urology. Single-use ureteroscopes and cystoscopes are expanding for kidney stone treatment and urinary tract diagnosis. Ambu’s aScope 5 Cysto HD is the first disposable flexible cysto-nephroscope cleared in the U.S. for PCNL procedures.

Pulmonology. Disposable bronchoscopes provide sterility with HD visualization, and are valued in infection-sensitive and emergency settings.

Minimally invasive surgery. Laparoscopes are the fastest-growing product segment, driven by obesity and GI disorders, lower sterilization costs and fewer infection-related complications.

ENT and other specialties. Single-use rhinolaryngoscopes, such as Zsquare’s ENT-Flex, along with devices for gynecology, neurosurgery and dentistry, are widening the application base.

Oncology. Rising cancer incidence supports demand across the board. The American Cancer Society projects about 2.1 million new U.S. cancer cases in 2026. Endoscopy supports detection, staging, biopsy and early-stage treatment.

Final Thoughts

Disposable endoscopes are growing on safety, operational simplicity and clinical breadth. Manufacturers that close the remaining performance gap with reusable systems, while expanding in outpatient care and emerging markets, will be best placed through 2033.
