Powder Coatings Market: Future Prospects for High-Performance Surface Protection
Valued at USD 17.37 billion in 2025, the powder coatings market is projected to reach USD 18.25 billion in 2026 and USD 27.25 billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 5.10% during the forecast period 2026–2034, according to Polaris Market Research. Key players include Akzo Nobel N.V., PPG Industries, Inc., JOTUN, Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd., RPM International, Inc., BASF SE, Arkema, and The Sherwin-Williams Company. This article reviews regional performance and the strategic investments shaping competition across the 2026–2034 forecast period.
Regional Analysis of the Powder Coatings Market
Asia Pacific accounted for the largest revenue share of 38.1% in 2025. Rapid urbanization and industrialization in major nations such as India and China have increased demand for powder coatings, and expanding infrastructure and construction sectors, supported by greater government investment in construction projects, further support regional development.
North America emerged as the second-largest regional market in 2025. End-use sectors including construction and automotive in the US and Canada drive demand, while booming nonresidential construction, fueled by the rising real estate sector and robust economic growth, is expected to augment growth. The report also covers Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa. By resin type and application, polyester led with a 27.1% share and consumer goods led with a 23.9% share in 2025.
Strategic M&A Expanding Technology Capabilities
Recent transactions highlight a push toward specialized technologies. PPG Industries completed the acquisition of Alpha Coating Technologies, a U.S. manufacturer of powder coatings for light industrial applications and heat-sensitive substrates such as MDF. The deal adds low-cure powder coatings capability and expands PPG's offering in fast-growing, sustainable powder segments.
AkzoNobel reported completing the acquisition of Stahl's Performance Powder Coatings business, which focuses on heat-sensitive substrates and UV and thermal curing powders. The transaction broadens AkzoNobel's technology range into low-temperature and UV-curable powders and opens markets such as MDF, plywood, and plastics, supporting its Grow & Deliver strategy in powder coatings. PPG also acquired the powder coatings business of Arsonsisi in Italy, including a highly automated plant in Verbania with metallic bonding capabilities and approximately USD 15 million in sales in 2021. The deal expands PPG's EMEA powder footprint and supports premium architectural and industrial finishes, advancing PPG's goal of growing sustainably advantaged products to 40% of sales by 2025.
In January 2024, Nippon Paint Holdings Co., Ltd. announced plans to acquire 75% of the share capital of Alina Group LLP through its subsidiary Nippon Paint Holdings SG Pte. Ltd., aiming to develop new products and expand its business areas.

Capacity Investment and Application Reach
PPG announced a USD 11 million investment to double production capacity at its powder coatings plant in San Juan del Rio, Mexico, serving automotive, appliance, and industrial customers in Mexico and Latin America. Further expansions, including in Brazil, support a strategic pivot toward powder as a growth and sustainability platform.
By application, the market spans consumer goods, architectural, automotive, general industries, and furniture. Advanced architectural powder coatings feature in PPG's sustainably advantaged portfolio, while AkzoNobel has built dedicated portfolios for e-mobility. Among coating methods, fluidized bed coating sits alongside the electrostatic fluidized bed process and flame spraying.
Competitive Priorities and Outlook
Competition is intense, shaped by innovative product offerings, technological advancements, mergers and acquisitions, and strategic partnerships. Several participants are prioritizing sustainable coating solutions, developing eco-friendly powder coatings that comply with stringent government regulations. Companies invest significantly in research and development to introduce innovative products for diverse customer needs. The report notes that challenges in achieving thin powder coating films remain a restraint, even as cost savings and expanding applications support growth through 2034. Increased application of powder coatings in numerous industries continues to fuel demand.
