Andrew Huberman on Habit Formation: Huberman Blueprint Steps to Make Changes Stick

Building new habits is often harder than it should be, not because of a lack of willpower, but because of how habits are actually formed at a neurological level. A more realistic framework helps make behavior change genuinely stick over time rather than fading after a few weeks.

Starting Smaller Than Feels Necessary

One of the most common mistakes in habit formation is starting with too large a commitment, which increases the likelihood of early failure and abandonment. Beginning with a version of the habit so small it feels almost too easy tends to produce better long-term consistency and momentum.

Anchoring New Habits to Existing Ones

Attaching a new habit to an already established routine, such as doing a brief stretch immediately after brushing teeth, provides a natural trigger that reduces reliance on memory or motivation alone. Over time, the existing habit becomes a reliable prompt for the new one.

Consistency Over Intensity

Repeating a behavior consistently, even in a minimal form, tends to build the underlying neural pathways for habit formation more effectively than occasional intense effort. Missing a day occasionally isn't catastrophic, but consistent repetition, especially in the early weeks, matters far more than any single session's intensity.

Using Dopamine and Managing Setbacks

Deliberately acknowledging small wins along the way, rather than waiting for a distant final outcome, can help sustain motivation during the habit-building process. Treating a missed day as a minor deviation rather than a total failure also preserves the overall trajectory of habit formation, preventing all-or-nothing thinking. This reflects the kind of thinking that runs through the Huberman Blueprint.

Building Habits That Actually Last

Combining small starting points, existing-routine anchoring, and a forgiving approach to setbacks, principles reflected in the Huberman Blueprint, creates a realistic, sustainable framework for lasting behavior change. Environment design plays a significant supporting role in habit formation that's sometimes overlooked in favor of purely psychological strategies. Making a desired behavior physically easier to start, such as placing running shoes by the door the night before, reduces the friction that often derails good intentions before they translate into consistent action.
