What is the meaning of a dead pixel?

Wondering what is a dead pixel? If yes, then this article will ensure that you know everything that there is to know about defective pixels.

A dead pixel is like a tiny dot on your screen that no longer lights up, kind of stays there, and doesn’t do its job. On an LCD, that usually means the pixel’s red, green, and blue subpixels are all stuck off, so you end up noticing a small black speck even when that area of the display should be bright.

On the other hand, a stuck pixel or a bright pixel is one that does keep shining (sometimes it’s red, green, blue, or even white). Both of these are sometimes lumped together as “pixel anomalies”; you’ll see that phrase a lot in manuals or support pages.

Why do Dead Pixels Happen?

Modern screens are packed with millions of addressable subpixels, each being managed by a transistor. If a transistor, or nearby circuitry, has a failure, then a subpixel can end up permanently off (dark) or permanently on (bright). And because there are so many subpixels, it’s not shocking to spot a few anomalies somewhere across a panel, even from trusted brands.

How can you check for a Dead Pixel?

First, clean the glass, as sometimes dust is just dust, but it looks like a bad spot. Next, put up full-screen solid test colors (white, black, red, green, blue), then scan slowly across the display with your eyes. This will allow you to know whether the pixel on your screen is really dead.

Can You Fix a Dead Pixel?

For dead pixels: usually not something you can repair at home, since it’s a hardware failure. The “real” solution is a panel replacement, and sometimes that’s covered under warranty (it depends; see the next section or your coverage terms).

For stuck pixels: sometimes they can recover after you run a rapid color-cycling pattern for several minutes. It is not guaranteed, but it tends to be low risk if you use a reputable pixel-cycling tool.
