Pain located along the inside of the knee joint is often referred to as medial knee pain. Although the location provides a useful clue, it does not identify one specific condition.

The medial collateral ligament is one structure that may be responsible. MCL injuries are common in sports and can range from mild stretching to more significant tears.

The medial meniscus is another important structure. A meniscus tear may produce pain near the joint line and may be accompanied by swelling, clicking, catching, or a sensation that the knee is locking.

In older adults, osteoarthritis can contribute to pain on the inner side of the knee. Symptoms often develop gradually and may include stiffness after periods of inactivity.

Pain slightly below the inner knee can sometimes involve the pes anserine bursa or nearby tendons rather than the joint itself.

The treatment depends on the cause. A ligament injury, for example, may require a different rehabilitation plan than arthritis or a meniscus problem.

For this reason, repeatedly treating knee pain without determining why it is happening may not provide a lasting solution.

If inner knee discomfort persists, a healthcare professional can assess movement, stability, strength, and tenderness and determine whether imaging or additional evaluation is necessary.
