September 1, 2026 — The global propane market is expected to reach USD 154.10 billion by 2036, up from USD 122.76 billion in 2026, as residential heating, industrial applications, transport fuel, and petrochemical feedstock demand support steady consumption.

Fact.MR values the market at USD 120.00 billion in 2025. The market is expected to add USD 31.34 billion between 2026 and 2036.

Propane remains an important energy commodity for regions where natural gas pipeline access is limited. Residential and commercial heating represents the leading application, accounting for 45.0% of the market in 2026. Demand is supported by off-grid communities in North America and parts of Asia.

Industrial users also contribute to market demand through process heating requirements. Transport applications are expanding as autogas adoption increases in countries including India, South Korea, and Brazil.

Natural Gas Liquids Account for 70% Share

Natural gas liquids represent the largest source segment, holding 70.0% share in 2026. Expanding shale gas production supports propane recovery volumes, while integrated natural gas processing infrastructure helps maintain supply.

Refinery sources account for the remaining 30% share. These supplies serve petroleum refineries, chemical processing facilities, and fuel production applications.

Distribution patterns also vary across end users. Cylinders lead distribution with 40% share in 2026, followed by bulk tanks at 35% and autogas distribution at 25%.

Cylinder-based distribution remains important for residential and commercial customers because of its accessibility and flexibility. Bulk tanks serve commercial and industrial facilities requiring larger storage volumes.

India Leads Country Growth

India is projected to record the fastest growth among the countries covered by Fact.MR, with a 3.2% CAGR from 2026 to 2036. Expansion of rural LPG distribution networks and broader energy infrastructure support demand.

China follows with a 2.6% CAGR. Growth is linked to petrochemical propane dehydrogenation capacity additions and industrial development.

Brazil is projected to expand at a 2.4% CAGR, supported by established distribution infrastructure and growing energy demand. The USA follows at 2.1%, while South Korea records a 2.0% CAGR.

Germany and Japan represent mature markets, with projected CAGRs of 1.9% and 1.8%, respectively. Replacement demand, efficiency improvements, and regulatory compliance support continued procurement in these markets.

Petrochemical Demand Supports Long-Term Consumption

Propane demand is not limited to heating. Petrochemical producers use propane as a feedstock for propylene production through dehydrogenation processes.

Capacity additions in China and India create demand that is less dependent on seasonal heating patterns. Asian crackers are also pursuing feedstock diversification strategies, supporting procurement volumes across the forecast period.

At the same time, electrification of residential heating in developed economies creates a structural restraint. Natural gas and other energy alternatives also compete with propane in several applications.

Digital Monitoring Creates New Opportunities

The propane industry is moving toward connected supply management and digital monitoring. Real-time consumption tracking, predictive delivery systems, IoT connectivity, and automated safety monitoring can help suppliers improve fuel management.

Safety remains a major consideration across the value chain. Automated leak detection, certified storage systems, real-time monitoring, and digital maintenance documentation are identified as important areas for suppliers and distributors.

Service models also offer opportunities beyond basic fuel delivery. Suppliers can combine propane supply with storage solutions, delivery support, equipment availability, maintenance, and digital monitoring services.

Competitive Landscape

The competitive structure includes approximately 12 to 18 active players, with the top three to four companies holding around 40% to 45% of revenue, according to Fact.MR analysis. AmeriGas leads with a reported 15.2% market share.

Major participants include AmeriGas, Ferrellgas, Suburban Propane, SHV Energy, UGI, Sinopec, CNPC, Saudi Aramco, TotalEnergies, Repsol, Eni, Reliance, Bharat Petroleum, SK Gas, and Mitsui.

Competition is shaped by distribution reach, supply reliability, product quality, regulatory certification, and regional service capabilities. Standard cylinder delivery and basic storage systems face greater commoditization, while industrial applications, IoT-enabled monitoring, and service contracts provide opportunities for differentiation.

Analyst View

S.N. Jha, Principal Consultant at Fact.MR, said:

“Industry participants will observe that propane demand remains closely connected to residential heating, industrial applications, transportation fuel, and petrochemical feedstock requirements. Companies with broad distribution networks, reliable supply capabilities, and strong regulatory compliance can maintain competitive positions as regional demand patterns evolve.”
