Hydropower Market Set for USD 57.97 Billion Absolute Growth

Storage hydropower plants account for 55% of the plant type segment in 2026, making them the leading plant category in the hydropower market. The segment includes reservoir-based facilities and pumped storage installations that provide dispatchable generation and grid balancing.
Pumped storage is identified as the fastest-growing sub-segment. These plants store electricity by moving water to upper reservoirs during periods of low demand and generate power when demand rises. Fact.MR states that project pipelines in Australia, Europe, China, and India are creating the strongest pumped hydro development cycle in decades.
Reaction turbines hold 60% of the technology segment in 2026. Francis turbines serve medium-head applications from 30 to 600 meters, while Kaplan turbines are used in low-head, high-flow applications. Impulse turbines, including Pelton turbines, serve high-head applications, while crossflow turbines support small hydropower projects.
Power generation represents 60% of the application segment in 2026. Fact.MR notes that hydropower provides approximately 16% of global electricity generation, making it the largest renewable energy source. Energy storage through pumped hydro is the fastest-growing application as grids require greater balancing capacity.
Modernization Creates a Key Investment Route
Aging hydropower fleets are creating opportunities for modernization and uprating. Fact.MR identifies North America, Europe, and parts of Asia as regions where upgrades can increase capacity and efficiency without requiring new dam construction.
Digital tools are also changing fleet management. Digital twins, AI-based operational optimization, and predictive maintenance are being applied to improve generation efficiency, reduce unplanned downtime, and extend equipment life. Fact.MR estimates that these technologies can improve generation efficiency by 2% to 5%. The global installed hydropower fleet exceeds 1,300 GW, giving even small efficiency gains the potential to add generation value.
“The hydropower market is experiencing a strategic revaluation as the energy transition highlights the unique value of dispatchable renewable generation and large-scale energy storage,” said Shambhu Nath Jha, Principal Consultant at Fact.MR.
Jha also points to pumped hydro storage as a central technology for renewable-heavy electricity systems. “Pumped hydro storage is the only proven technology capable of providing grid-scale energy storage measured in gigawatt-hours, making it essential to electricity systems with high renewable penetration,” Jha said.
China and India Lead Country Growth
China is projected to record a 2.1% CAGR through 2036, followed by India at 2.0%. The United States is projected to grow at 1.8%, Germany at 1.6%, Brazil at 1.5%, Canada at 1.4%, and Japan at 1.3%.
China's outlook is supported by continued capacity additions, pumped storage development, and an installed hydropower base exceeding 420 GW. India is expected to benefit from new large hydro projects, pumped storage programs, small hydro development, and multipurpose dam projects.
The United States is seeing demand from fleet modernization, pumped storage, non-powered dam conversion, and environmental compliance upgrades. Brazil's market is shaped by run-of-river projects, fleet optimization, floating solar-hydro integration, and transmission expansion.
Competitive Landscape
China Three Gorges Corporation holds approximately 18% market share through its hydropower portfolio, including the 22.5 GW Three Gorges Dam. Statkraft, ANDRITZ, and Voith are also identified as major participants. Siemens, ABB, Alfa Laval, ENGIE, Tata Power, and Norsk Hydro serve specific regional and industry segments.
Recent developments include China Three Gorges Corporation's pumped storage pipeline, ANDRITZ's variable-speed pumped storage turbine portfolio, and Voith's HyPower digital twin platform for hydropower plant optimization.
Environmental and social concerns, long development timelines of 5 to 15 years for new large hydro projects, and climate-related changes in rainfall and river flows remain constraints for the industry.
