Renewable power adds another layer of demand. Wind and solar generation can vary over time, creating reactive power management requirements at generation sites and grid connection points. The trend is especially relevant as transmission systems connect remote renewable resources with major demand centers.

Oil-Immersed Reactors Hold 70% Product Share

Oil-immersed shunt reactors account for 70% of the product type segment in 2026. Their position reflects their established use in outdoor high-voltage transmission applications, where oil insulation supports heat dissipation and electrical isolation.

Fixed oil-immersed reactors remain widely used across transmission networks. Variable oil-immersed reactors are gaining attention as renewable generation increases the need for dynamic voltage control.

Dry-type shunt reactors serve indoor and space-constrained applications. Air-core reactors are also gaining adoption in renewable energy and industrial projects where compact design and low maintenance are priorities.

Transmission lines represent 50% of the application segment in 2026. High voltage, covering 72.5 kV to 400 kV, accounts for 45% of the voltage level segment.

Three-phase reactors hold 65% of the phase type segment, while oil-insulated systems account for 60% of insulation type share.

Natural Ester and Digital Monitoring Gain Attention

Product development is moving beyond conventional reactor configurations. Natural ester-insulated shunt reactors with digital monitoring are emerging as a notable technology trend.

In May 2026, Hitachi Energy delivered its first 460 kV natural ester-filled shunt reactor to ISA Energia Brasil at the Bauru Substation in São Paulo. The installation includes four single-phase units rated at 66.67 MVAr each. Each unit uses approximately 15,000 liters of natural ester oil.

The development combines high-voltage performance with improved biodegradability and fire safety. Fact.MR identifies natural ester fluids as an opportunity as environmental compliance and fire safety requirements gain attention.

Digital monitoring is also becoming part of the reactor technology mix. Hitachi Energy launched a digital monitoring platform for shunt reactors in Q2 2025. Schneider Electric acquired ReactiveQ, a digital twin platform for reactor asset management, in March 2025.

Siemens Energy also secured contracts in Q1 2025 to supply shunt reactors for several renewable energy zones in Australia.

India Leads Country Growth

India is projected to record the fastest growth among the countries covered, with a CAGR of 7.6% through 2036. Demand is linked to 765 kV transmission corridor construction, renewable energy integration, ultra-high-voltage development, and industrial power quality requirements.

China follows with a projected CAGR of 7.3%. UHV grid expansion, offshore wind integration, and digital substation deployment support demand.

The U.S. market is projected to expand at 6.2% through 2036, supported by grid modernization, renewable energy zones, aging reactor replacement, and growing interregional transmission capacity.

Germany is forecast to grow at 5.9%, with offshore wind integration, cross-border transmission expansion, and smart grid modernization supporting procurement.

Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil are projected to grow at 5.5%, 5.3%, and 4.8%, respectively.

Competition Centers on Technology and Manufacturing

The competitive landscape is highly consolidated. The top five manufacturers hold approximately 55% of market share, according to Fact.MR.

ABB Ltd. leads with approximately 17% share. Siemens AG and Hitachi Energy Ltd. maintain strong positions through technology capabilities and utility relationships. General Electric Company, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, and Toshiba Corporation also hold established positions across selected voltage classes and regional markets.

“Variable shunt reactors with on-load tap changers are gaining specification preference because they provide voltage flexibility that fixed reactors cannot deliver in grids with high renewable penetration,” Jha said.
