When Should a Headache Become a Concern?

Most people experience headaches occasionally, and many are related to everyday factors such as stress, fatigue, dehydration, or changes in routine.

However, some headache patterns deserve additional attention. A headache that suddenly becomes extremely severe, feels dramatically different from previous headaches, or occurs with neurological symptoms should not be ignored.

Symptoms such as confusion, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, fainting, seizures, or significant vision changes can require urgent medical assessment. Headaches following a serious head injury should also be evaluated.

For recurring headaches, keeping a headache diary can help identify possible triggers. Record sleep, meals, hydration, stress, caffeine, medications, and the timing and severity of symptoms.

Knowing when to worry about a headache can help you recognize when a headache differs from your usual experience.
