What "Fully Automatic" Should Mean in a Breathing Air System

The word "automatic" appears on nearly every breathing air system spec sheet, and it rarely means the same thing twice. Some units cycle their desiccant towers on a timer and stop there. An operator still cracks a drain valve twice a day, still glances at the gauges to confirm the towers actually changed over, and still has no idea whether the compressed breathable air feeding a crew's supplied air respirators meets grade D air requirements at that moment. That's a lot of babysitting for a machine sold as hands-off.

Where Does a Breathing Air System Stop Needing a Person?

A fair test: after startup, what does someone still have to touch? The answer separates the brochure from the hardware. A properly automatic breathing air system cycles its own towers, removes its own condensate, watches its own outlet for carbon monoxide, and raises an alarm when any of those steps fails. The operator's job shrinks to reading a display and responding to alarms, which is exactly what a safety manager wants from a respirator air supply that a blasting crew depends on for eight hours straight.

Aircel's BHD Series makes a useful reference point because it's built around that definition rather than around the timer.

Who's Actually Running the Breathing Air System?

Timer-based units know what time it is. They don't know whether the tower changeover happened. The Aircel Programmable Controller takes a different approach: it runs the full sequence and displays a plain-text description of each step, so anyone walking past the breathing air system can read "Tower 1 drying, Tower 2 regenerating" instead of guessing from a blinking light. Pressure transducers confirm that each tower reached the pressure it should have. If a tower fails to change over, the controller triggers an alarm and a red strobe rather than continuing to push air of unknown quality downstream.

A failed changeover on a timer-only unit looks identical to normal operation from across the room. The desiccant saturates, the dewpoint climbs, and nobody finds out until moisture shows up in a hood.

What About the Water Nobody Wants to Drain?

Manual drains get forgotten. A maintenance tech has forty other things on the list, and the pre-filter drain is the easiest one to skip. When condensate collects and carries over, it loads the desiccant early and drags oil aerosols into the towers along with it.

A zero-loss automatic condensate drain removes that step entirely. It senses the liquid level and discharges only the condensate, holding back the compressed air that a timed solenoid would waste with every cycle. On a breathing air compressor running around the clock, that saved purge air adds up, and the pre-filter stays dry without anyone remembering to visit it.

Can the Valves in a Breathing Air System Keep Up for Ten Years?

Automation is only as trustworthy as the components carrying it out. A controller can command a changeover a hundred thousand times, and a sticking valve will still ignore it in year three. The BHD Series uses automatic piston inlet and outlet valves rated for ten years of service, plus an angle-body purge exhaust valve with the same rating. That longevity is the difference between "automatic on installation day" and "automatic for the life of the media," which under normal conditions runs three to five years between changeouts.

Fully automatic, then, means three things at minimum: the control system verifies the cycle rather than assuming it, condensate leaves on its own, and the valves executing the sequence outlast the desiccant several times over. A breathing air system that clears all three lets a facility document compliance with OSHA breathing air standards from the controller display instead of from a clipboard. Facilities weighing a new unit, or replacing one that demands more attention than it should, can talk through sizing and specifics with Air & Vacuum Process, Inc., which supplies the Aircel BHD Series.
