Every Advantage of a Boot Knife, In One Place

You can carry a small fixed blade on your belt, tip-down on your dominant side, just like everyone does. This can be discreet and practical for both EDC and defensive applications. Or, you can carry a boot knife in a slightly less-than-conventional configuration.

And, with that said, here’s every reason you might want to do just that.

  • It’s highly discreet. Probably the most attractive aspect of a boot knife is that it’s highly discreet. Anyone can be expected to carry a knife on their belt, on their dominant side, but not everyone thinks to check a boot for a concealed knife. This alone makes carrying a boot knife appealing because you can generally keep one much better concealed than a knife on your belt, or carried anywhere else, for that matter.

  • It keeps your belt free. Your belt has limited real estate for carrying gear. If you carry a gun and spare magazines, you might not want to crowd your belt with a knife on top of everything else you carry. Carrying a knife in a boot will give you more space to carry your other gear.

  • It’s great as a redundant backup. Just because you carry a boot knife doesn’t mean that has to be the only knife you carry. If you carry one on your pack or on your belt, your boot knife can serve as a very practical redundant backup. As they say, two is one and one is none, and carrying a boot knife can give you the flexibility to carry a second blade for utility or defensive applications, and out of the way.

  • You should be able to draw and resheath with one hand. It’s easier to draw and resheath knives carried in some configurations than it is for others. For instance, it is easy to draw a neck knife with one hand but generally it takes two hands to resheath one. With a boot knife, depending on how you’re carrying it, you should be able to both draw and resheath it with one hand.

So, ultimately, carrying a boot knife is tops for discretion, will keep your belt unencumbered, can serve as a redundant backup and on top of all of that, should be easy to draw and sheath.
