When historic building movers took on the unusual task of relocating a small gas station through Center City Philadelphia, they weren't simply transporting an old structure. They were helping preserve a piece of the city's past that had stood quietly at 20th and Arch Street for decades.

The modest brick building dates back to 1930, when it served as a Gulf gas station. At the time, filling stations were becoming a familiar part of American city life, built to serve a growing number of motorists. This particular station eventually became part of the streetscape around Center City, where generations of Philadelphians came to recognize its distinctive appearance.

But as the years passed, the station stopped serving its original purpose. It sat vacant for nearly four decades and gradually fell into disrepair. Its future because yet more uncertain when plans were made for new construction at the 20th and Arch Street site.

Demolishing the station would have been a straightforward solution. Despite its small size, however, the building had developed a following among people who appreciated Philadelphia's historical architecture. For some residents, it was more than an abandoned gas station. It was a reminder of another era of the city.

Preservation offered another possibility to demolition: move the building to a new location. The decision to save the building through relocation turned the project into a remarkable engineering challenge.

Historic Building Movers Assess the Gas Station

The brick structure measured only about 11 by 25 feet, but moving a building, especially in an urban environment, takes more coordination than its dimensions might suggest. Crews had to support and brace the building so it could withstand the journey without being damaged, and lift it from its foundation so the structural moving dollies could be placed under it.

Once secured on dollies, the station was ready for its approximately mile-and-a-half journey to Fairmount Park, near the Sedgeley Porter House. The move required extensive planning, permits, engineering work, and coordination between several parties. Roads along the route were temporarily closed so the oversized load could pass safely, and the building was moved at night to lessen traffic disruption.

Wolfe House's operator used a remote-control system to guide the house down the street, while crew members positioned along the route monitored the building and move path. The process was deliberately steady, allowing for leveling and steering the dollies as they carried the station toward the new site.

A New Role for a Historic Landmark

For Philadelphia residents watching the unusual procession, it was an opportunity to say goodbye to a familiar landmark and to watch its next chapter begin. People who stayed up late to watch the move stopped to take photographs and get a final look at the station before it left its longtime location. Some had personal connections to the building, while others simply admired its character and historical value.

Its new purpose gives the structure a future beyond simply being a historical artifact. Following renovation, the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia plans to use the building as a base for its Youth Cycling program. The exact placement within Fairmount Park still needed to be determined at the time of the move, but the intention was clear: give an old building a useful role in the community.

The Philadelphia gas station's journey is a good example of how historic building movers can make preservation possible when development and history otherwise seem destined to collide. Instead of disappearing under new construction, this little 1930 structure gets another chance to remain part of Philadelphia's story.
