When you or your child has been diagnosed with a Chiari malformation, you want answers that are clear, timely and based on real neurosurgery experience. At Long Island Neurosurgical Associates (LINA) in New York, our team offers evaluation, treatment planning, surgery and long-term follow-up for infants, children, teens, and adults with conditions affecting the brain, spine and nervous system. Patients seeking Chiari malformation treatment in New York may find that LINA offers a care approach that is mindful of both the medical needs of the patient and the concerns of the family.

A Chiari malformation happens when part of the lower brain, the cerebellum, sits lower than it should and pushes into the space normally reserved for the spinal cord at the base of the skull. This crowding can affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and put pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord. Some patients have no symptoms at all and the finding is discovered by chance on imaging done for another reason. Others develop headaches, neck pain, balance problems, or other symptoms that bring them in for evaluation.

LINA is Family Care. This means we take time to explain what’s going on, what tests might be needed, what treatment options might be appropriate and what to expect before and after surgery, if surgery is recommended. We want you to feel supported at every step of your care and to be able to make informed decisions.

Call our New York office to make an appointment and talk with our team about what’s next for you or your child.

Chiari Malformation Care for Infants, Children, Teens, and Adults

A Chiari malformation can be identified at any age. Some infants are diagnosed before birth or shortly after delivery, often alongside a related condition such as spina bifida. Others aren’t diagnosed until adolescence or adulthood, when headaches, neck pain, or balance problems prompt an MRI that reveals the finding for the first time.

In infants and young children, a Chiari malformation may cause feeding difficulties, breathing irregularities, or delays reaching developmental milestones. In older children, teens, and adults, the most common signs are headaches at the back of the head, often worse with coughing, sneezing, or straining, along with neck pain, numbness, or balance and coordination changes.

LINA assesses each patient by age, symptoms, imaging, medical history, and development. The care plan might involve monitoring, further testing, surgery, or coordination with other specialists. Families and adult patients alike are encouraged to ask questions and share what they’ve noticed, which helps guide the right plan of care.

Understanding Chiari Malformation and Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow

The brain and spinal cord are bathed in cerebrospinal fluid, which helps cushion and protect the nervous system. Normally, this fluid moves freely between the skull and spinal canal. In a Chiari malformation, the crowding at the base of the skull can block or slow this normal flow, which is part of why symptoms like headache often worsen with activities that briefly raise pressure in the head, such as coughing or straining.

Not every Chiari malformation is the same. Type I, the most common form, may cause no symptoms for years. Other types are typically found earlier in life and may occur alongside related conditions, including hydrocephalus, spina bifida, or a fluid-filled cavity in the spinal cord called syringomyelia.

You do not have to have all the answers before you ask for an appointment. If imaging has shown tonsillar herniation, crowding at the skull base, or another possible finding, LINA can review the results and explain what they may mean for you or your child.
