Towards the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, roughly midway through the end of the Return of the King, Elrond of Rivendell brings Aragorn a sword named Anduril that he can use to command the armies of the dead against the forces of Sauron in a bid to buy time for Sam and Frodo. 

This new sword was renamed Anduril, or Flame of the West, and was forged from the shards of Narsil, the sword used by Isildur to cut the One Ring of power from Sauron’s finger.

• In the books, Aragorn carries the hilt-shard of Narsil from the very beginning. He has it at his meeting with the hobbits in The Prancing Pony. 
• Aragorn’s sword, Narsil, is actually renamed Anduril, meaning “Flame of the West” as indicated. 
• The first sword, Narsil, was actually made in the First Age by a master dwarven smith named Telchar.
• The same smith forged a knife named Angrist as a companion for this blade. Angrist was the knife that Beren used to pry one of the Silmarils from Morgoth’s crown.
• Angrist broke as Beren was attempting to pry the second two Silmaril’s from Morgoth’s crown, just as Narsil broke as Elendil fell after throwing Sauron down.
• The reforging of Aragorn’s sword, Narsil, into Anduril is not just a practical plot device. It is also symbolic because it represents the Return of the King to Gondor, who has been so long absent. 
• Aragorn’s new sword, Anduril, is engraved with Quenya runes for “Sun” and “Moon” as well as an inscription “I am Anduril who was once Narsil, sword of Elendil. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me.”
• Apparently, Anduril shone different colors depending on the light that struck it. For instance, sunlight made the blade shine red. 
• There is no specific history on how Narsil came into possession of Elendil or his forebears, but it did come to Middle Earth after the fall of Numenor.
