For decades, neurosurgeons and other microsurgeons have relied on operating microscopes to magnify the surgical field. These instruments are powerful but bulky, forcing surgeons into fixed postures and limiting the team's view of the procedure. Exoscopes offer an alternative. These digital systems capture the surgical field with high-resolution cameras and display it on large monitors or heads-up displays, offering magnification and illumination without the physical constraints of a traditional microscope. The shift is subtle but significant.

The ergonomic benefits are among the most cited advantages. Operating microscopes require surgeons to bend and hold awkward positions for hours, contributing to neck and back pain. Exoscopes allow a more natural posture and can be adjusted more flexibly. The digital nature of the system also enables features that optical microscopes cannot provide, such as image enhancement, fluorescence integration, and recording.
