EUV Pellicle Market: The Thin Shield Protecting Advanced Chipmaking

Inside the most advanced semiconductor fabs, a membrane only tens of nanometers thick helps decide whether a chip is made correctly. It sits above the photomask in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, and a single stray particle without it can print a defect onto every wafer. As chipmakers push toward smaller nodes, the EUV Pellicle Market is becoming a strategically important corner of the semiconductor supply chain.

Market Snapshot

According to Polaris Market Research, the EUV Pellicle Market was valued at USD 622.06 million in 2025 and is estimated at USD 712.84 million in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 2,157.72 million by 2034, a CAGR of 14.8% from 2026 to 2034. Growth is driven by High-NA EUV adoption, rising scanner power, carbon nanotube membrane development, local sourcing, and larger photomask formats.

What Is an EUV Pellicle?

An EUV pellicle is an ultra-thin, highly transmissive membrane mounted on a frame just above an EUV photomask. Its job is to keep particles out of the focal plane during exposure, so contamination does not transfer to the wafer as a defect. Because masks are far more expensive than pellicles, chipmakers accept a small transmittance loss in exchange for protection.

EUV pellicles are very different from their DUV cousins. DUV pellicles use fluoropolymer membranes that absorb too strongly at the 13.5 nm EUV wavelength, so EUV versions rely on silicon-based or carbon nanotube materials only about 30 to 50 nanometers thick. Peer-reviewed research points to working requirements of roughly 88 to 90 percent transmittance, low deflection, and long exposure durability. Polaris notes that EUV pellicles cost roughly 20 to 50 times more than DUV units, with disclosed negotiated pricing in the range of USD 15,000 to 36,000.

Key Growth Drivers

The High-NA transition. The shift from 0.33 NA to 0.55 NA scanners brings different optical and thermal conditions, creating a new qualification cycle for membranes, frames, and mounting systems. Intel and ASML reported more than one million cumulative wafers processed on High-NA systems as of September 2026. However, Polaris notes that no High-NA-specific pellicle had shipped commercially at the time of its report.

The 12-inch photomask initiative. In September 2026, TSMC, Samsung, Intel, and ASML formed the Large Mask Consortium to develop a 12-inch photomask format, with a pilot line targeted for 2031. Larger masks mean new pellicle dimensions, frames, and qualification work rather than a simple scale-up of existing production.

Supply chain localization. Samsung took an 8% stake in S&S Tech in 2020 and a 6.9% stake in Freudenberg Sealing Technologies (FST) in 2021 to build a domestic alternative to Japan's Mitsui Chemicals. Samsung has since awarded FST a KRW 25 billion contract for pellicle handling equipment at its Taylor, Texas fab. TSMC, meanwhile, began converting its 8-inch Fab 3 to in-house pellicle production in September 2025.

The Carbon Nanotube Opportunity

As EUV scanner power rises, pellicles absorb more energy and heat up, putting pressure on silicon-based designs. Carbon nanotube (CNT) membranes are emerging as an answer. Imec and Mitsui Chemicals are developing a CNT pellicle targeting more than 94% transmittance and power durability above 1,000 W, compared with roughly 400 W for Mitsui's Mo-Si design. Polaris projects CNT membranes to grow at a CAGR of 16.73% through 2034. LINTEC also developed a dual-density CNT pellicle in February 2026 with improved durability at 300 to 400°C.

Segment Highlights

By membrane material, silicon-based membranes led with a 58.64% share in 2025, thanks to their established use in EUV production. Within that group, Mo-Si held 31.25% and metal-silicide 15.5%.

By scanner compatibility, Low-NA (0.33 NA) pellicles held an 82.64% share, reflecting the large installed base of current EUV systems. High-NA (0.55 NA) pellicles are projected to grow faster, at a CAGR of 16.48%.

By end user, foundries led with 50.86%, followed by integrated device manufacturers at 36.72% and mask shops at 12.42%. Mask shops matter more than their share suggests, as they link pellicle suppliers, mask makers, and chipmakers during qualification.

Regional Outlook

Asia Pacific dominated in 2025 with a 63.84% share, anchored by Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, where manufacturing and qualification programs are concentrated. Europe held 17.42%, supported by ASML and imec, while the Middle East and Africa accounted for 3.77% and Latin America for 2.61%. North America is expected to grow fastest among the major regions, at a CAGR of 15.29%, driven by Intel's High-NA work and the expansion of advanced manufacturing in the U.S.

Competitive Landscape

The EUV Pellicle Market is concentrated among a small group of qualified or qualifying suppliers. Mitsui Chemicals is the established market leader and Low-NA incumbent. S&S Tech and FST are emerging challengers backed by Samsung, while TSMC represents a vertically integrated, in-house model rather than an open-market supplier. ASML plays a distinct role as the scanner maker whose specifications shape pellicle requirements. Upstream players include imec for CNT research and Canatu for CNT synthesis equipment, while Hoya and Toppan Photomasks serve adjacent parts of the mask supply chain.

Buyers also take very different approaches. Samsung pursues equity-backed localization, TSMC builds in-house capacity, and Intel relies on external qualified suppliers. A strategy that works for one customer may not suit another.

Challenges and Barriers

Export controls are a major restraint. Japan added EUV pellicles to its controlled export list in 2024, requiring individual licenses for some shipments. Polaris points to a 2019 Japanese restriction on other chip chemicals, which cut hydrogen fluoride exports to South Korea by 96.8%, as a reminder of how quickly such rules can redirect supply chains.

Entry barriers are also steep. New suppliers must clear extensive qualification testing, meet demanding transmittance and durability specifications, invest in specialized membrane production, and persuade chipmakers to accept the risk of switching. They must also decide whether to target today's mask format or the future 12-inch standard.

The Road Ahead

The outlook for the EUV Pellicle Market is shaped by three forces: scanner power, High-NA qualification, and the move to larger masks. Suppliers that participate early in specification setting for 12-inch formats could influence future standards, though success depends on technical progress and customer acceptance. Commercial success for CNT pellicles will hinge on maintaining performance at production scale while controlling defects and cost. With sourcing strategies diverging across major chipmakers, the winners will be those who combine proven qualification, durable high-transmittance membranes, and secure, regionally resilient supply.
