IS/IEC 62368-1 Testing in India: Migration Plan for Laptop, TV, and IT Hardware Brands

BIS CRS products in India are transitioning from the electronics safety framework IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 and IS 616:2017 to IS/IEC 62368-1:2023. If your brand makes or imports laptops, TVs, monitors, printers, or comparable IT hardware, this change sets the standard against which your next test report needs to be built. Electronics testing services in India now offer both the old route and the new route depending on where your product is today. See ACE’s coverage of electronic apparatus testing services in India for the full scope.

What IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 Replaces and Why India Made the Move

IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 and IS 616:2017 were two different standards for IT equipment and for audio/video equipment, respectively. IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 combines both into one hazard-based approach, in tune with the international IEC standard, bringing IT and audio/video products under one umbrella. If you are currently registered to one of the older standards, that report does not automatically meet the new standard. The technical basis needs to be reviewed against the current standard model by model.

Products Affected: Laptops, Mini PCs, TVs, Monitors, Printers, and Audio Equipment

This migration by BIS includes the following categories: laptops, notebooks and tablets, Automatic Data Processing (ADP) machines, mini-PCs, televisions, video monitors, printers, plotters, scanners and audio/video equipment, and power adaptors for IT equipment, as applicable. However, rather than assuming coverage based on product type, check the current category of your product in the latest BIS CRS listing with a BIS approved testing lab.

●       ADP Machines and Laptops Under the Old IS 13252 Route

That was earlier applicable for certification of laptops and testing of automatic data processing machines. That route has not disappeared during the concurrent period, but it is not the long-term route; new applications should be planned against IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, with older reports being reviewed for migration rather than treated as the default. AUDIO VIDEO EQUIPMENT Prior to this migration, the safety of audio and video apparatus was covered under the

Products certified under IS 616:2017 will be reviewed in the same way to see if the current report supports continued registration. For new applications, plan for laptop testing services against IS/IEC 62368-1:2023.

Hazard-Based Testing Explained: Energy Sources and Safeguards

The foundation of IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 differs from those of the previous standards. It defines energy sources in a product. It can be electrical, thermal, mechanical, or chemical, which requires safeguards for each. The 360-testing approach includes electric shock, fire-related risks, mechanical dangers, and battery-related safety when applicable, often requiring dedicated battery testing services. The product's construction determines which parts apply. That means the lab that you choose must be aware of the energy sources and safeguards that are truly included in that model.

Migration Timeline and Why Early Testing Avoids a Lab Capacity Crunch

A notice of the migration dated 29 October 2025, and the general concurrent period will continue until 1 November 2028. Manufacturers should plan ahead and not wait until the deadline. This allows time for reviewing existing documents, determining models that may require retesting, testing management for multiple product lines, and BIS CRS documentation updates in parallel with testing.

Where ACE Test Labs Fits: IEC 62368-1 Reports with ILAC Logo

ACE Test Labs supports manufacturers, OEMs and importers in testing of electronic apparatus. It works against applicable standards in its scope. It has documentation support and is able to discuss product specific requirements prior to submission. Please verify the current applicable standard, product category and test requirements before booking – for the wider range see the electronics and IT testing services.

●       Documents and Model Series Declarations

Typically, submissions will include product specifications, model information, technical documentation, existing test reports, component information, and user manuals. The exact list of information needed will depend on your product and route, so confirm the final requirements directly with ACE Test Labs.

Why Choose ACE Test Labs for Electronic Equipment Testing Services

ACE Test Labs is a product testing lab in India. We offer electronic equipment testing services to manufacturers, OEMs, and importers. We test to the applicable standards within our scope, with documentation support, and can discuss product-specific requirements prior to submission. Confirm the current applicable standard, product category, and test requirements before booking. For TVs the safety testing under IS/IEC 62368-1 is different from the energy efficiency testing for TVs under BEE; a product may need both.

FAQs

1.     Is IS 13252 still valid in 2026?

IS 13252 (Part 1):2010 is superseded by IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for applicable products. The concurrent period is still valid till November 1, 2028. Please be aware that your product-specific notification may take precedence over this standard.

2.     What is the last date to migrate to IS/IEC 62368-1?

The general concurrent period is scheduled to end 1 November 2028. Verify your product-specific requirements and any later BIS or MeitY amendments before relying on this date.

3.     Do I need to retest every model?

It depends on how the models are built, how they differ from previous reports, existing documentation, and whether the models are eligible for a family or model-series approach. Get your lab to check your specific range.

4.     Are laptop adapters tested separately?

Power adaptors for IT equipment are separately identified in the BIS CRS framework, but exact requirements depend on your product configuration. Test only under current BIS requirements.

Planning migration? Reach out to ACE Test Labs for a review of your product category, existing reports, applicable standard, model range, and BIS CRS documentation. The team can help you understand the testing requirements, identify documents that may need updating, and discuss the applicable test methods before sample submission. Confirm the current NABL scope and BIS requirements for your specific product before proceeding.
