Facial pressure is another common symptom. Some people experience discomfort around the cheeks, forehead, eyes, or nose. The sensation may become more noticeable when bending forward.

Headache can also occur. However, not every headache associated with nasal symptoms is necessarily caused by a sinus infection.

A reduced sense of smell is another possible symptom. Congestion and inflammation can interfere with the normal movement of air through the nasal passages.

Other sinus infection symptoms can include cough, sore throat, fatigue, bad breath, and fever. Symptoms can vary depending on the underlying cause and whether the condition is acute or persistent.

Many sinus infections follow a viral respiratory illness. In some cases, symptoms improve as the original infection resolves. Not every sinus infection requires antibiotics.

Bacterial sinus infections can occur, but symptoms alone cannot always determine whether an infection is bacterial or viral. A healthcare professional may consider the duration, severity, and pattern of symptoms when deciding whether further treatment is appropriate.

People should be cautious about self-diagnosing based solely on mucus colour. Changes in mucus colour can occur during viral infections and do not automatically mean antibiotics are required.

Supportive measures may include rest, adequate fluids, saline nasal rinses, and other treatments recommended by a healthcare professional. Some people may use over-the-counter medicines, but these should be used according to label directions and with appropriate caution.

Persistent or severe symptoms should be evaluated. Medical advice may be particularly important when symptoms last longer than expected, repeatedly return, become significantly worse, or are accompanied by concerning symptoms.

Urgent assessment may be appropriate if someone develops severe swelling around the eyes, changes in vision, severe headache, confusion, or other serious symptoms.

Understanding sinus infection symptoms is helpful, but these symptoms can overlap with allergies, viral infections, and other conditions. A healthcare professional can help determine the likely cause when symptoms are persistent or concerning.
