People with severe pneumonia may require hospital treatment, oxygen, intravenous fluids, or respiratory support. Those recovering at home should follow medical advice, rest, drink adequate fluids if able, and take prescribed medicines as directed.

Do not take antibiotics left over from another illness. Using the wrong medication can cause side effects and contribute to antibiotic resistance.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips or skin, collapse, sudden confusion, or difficulty waking. Worsening chest pain or coughing up blood also requires urgent assessment.
