1. Battery Separators Market: Future Growth Prospects in Electric Mobility and Energy Storage
EVs, Gigafactories and Localized Supply: Demand Drivers in the Battery Separators Market
Demand for separators follows battery production, and battery production is being reshaped by vehicle electrification, large-scale manufacturing investment and regional supply strategies. Polaris Market Research values the Battery Separators market at around USD 11.82 billion in 2025 and expects a CAGR of 17.09% from 2026 to 2034. This article examines the end markets and supply-side shifts that buyers and suppliers should watch.
Electric Vehicle Batteries Set the Performance Bar
The automotive segment dominated end use with a 57.0% revenue share in 2025. Electric vehicle batteries operate under demanding conditions: high-rate charging, high energy density, high temperature and long working cycles. This raises the need for separators with superior thermal stability, mechanical strength, electrolyte compatibility and ionic conductivity.
Adoption is moving quickly. The report cites the UK Office for National Statistics, which announced that electric vehicles held a 55% share of new car registrations in June 2026, up from 47% in June 2025.
Battery Gigafactory Investment Pulls Separator Demand
Large-scale cell production drives parallel demand for separator materials, so every battery gigafactory announcement matters to suppliers. In August 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy provided USD 500 million for seven projects to scale up domestic critical-material processing, battery manufacturing and recycling capacity. That included a USD 50 million federal share for Coreshell Technologies to build the first U.S. gigafactory for silicon-anode battery production.
Separator makers are scaling too. ENTEK's Indiana facility is planned with initial capacity of 700 million m2 and production in Q4 2026, with annual capacity expected to reach 1.4 billion m2. In April 2026, Asahi Kasei said construction of its Hipore separator plant in Ontario had commenced, with commercial production timing aligned to North American market conditions. As each battery gigafactory comes online, suppliers are pushed to locate production closer to cell and vehicle clusters.
Energy Storage Systems and Stationary Demand
Growth in solar and wind generation is driving installations of grid-scale and distributed energy storage systems. These batteries store electricity when generation exceeds load and discharge when it falls short, undergoing prolonged and regular charge-discharge cycles. Separator quality affects ion transport, internal resistance, cycling stability and single-cell consistency across the pack, so materials that keep pore uniformity and electrolyte compatibility over extended use become especially valuable.
Industrial UPS applications in data centers, telecom buildings and manufacturing plants also need durable separator materials to support uptime and service life. The report notes that automotive demand leads, but stationary use is increasingly a growth area for energy storage systems.

Solid-State Battery Separators and Next-Generation Chemistries
Advances in solid-state batteries are opening a new technology space. Traditional porous polymer membranes are being replaced by solid-electrolyte structures based on ceramics, polymers, sulfides, oxides and composites, which widens demand for solid-state battery separators that deliver electrode separation with high ionic conduction. The commercial attraction is higher energy density, with potential benefits for electric vehicles, aerospace systems and miniaturized electronics, along with faster charging.
In February 2026, Natrion signed a memorandum of understanding with Soelect Inc. to collaborate on next-generation lithium-metal and solid-state batteries, combining Soelect's anode technology with Natrion's Active Separator, designed for scalable production using existing lithium-ion manufacturing equipment. Commercial progress is still slow, but pilot manufacturing investment may create a premium segment for solid-state battery separators.
Supply Chain Localization and Raw Material Risk
Supply chain localization is a defining industry trend. Locating separator production near cell and automotive centers improves independence from imports, delivery reliability and quality, shortens qualification cycles and allows faster response to changing requirements. North America is expected to record the highest regional CAGR, 20.0%, supported by battery supply chain realignment and a growing preference for domestic sourcing, and the U.S. is expected to record 20.60%.
Raw materials are the counterweight. Price swings in polyethylene, polypropylene, ceramic materials and specialty polymers can raise production costs, squeeze margins and complicate long-term pricing contracts with battery makers. Localizing supply can hedge some risk, but finding substitute suppliers and qualifying new materials takes significant time and capital. For many buyers, supply chain localization is therefore both an opportunity and a long-term investment.
Regional Snapshot
Asia Pacific led in 2025 with a 53.0% share, helped by a high concentration of lithium-ion cell makers, electric vehicle manufacturers and a well-developed supply chain, and China accounted for 57.0% of the regional market. Europe held a 17.0% share. Latin America is anticipated to advance at a 15.0% CAGR, and the Middle East & Africa at 13.86%.
Key Players in the Battery Separators Market
Key participants include Ahlstrom, Asahi Kasei Corporation (Celgard / Hipore), Bernard Dumas, Dow, Inc., Eaton Corporation plc, ENTEK International, Freudenberg Performance Materials, Green New Energy Materials, Hollingsworth & Vose, Mitsubishi Paper Mills, Ltd., Natrion, Sinoma Lithium Film Co., Ltd., SK IE Technology, Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd., Teijin Limited, Toray Battery Separator Film Korea Ltd., UBE Corporation and W-Scope Corporation.
Conclusion
The Battery Separators market is being pulled by electric vehicle batteries, each new battery gigafactory and growing energy storage systems deployment, while solid-state battery separators and supply chain localization shape the next phase. Suppliers that align capacity and technology with these shifts are best positioned.
