Diabetic Sores: Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention

Diabetic sores are areas of damaged skin that can develop in people with diabetes. They may begin as small cuts, blisters, pressure spots, or cracks, but can become serious when healing is delayed or infection develops. Understanding the causes and recognising changes early can help people protect their skin and seek appropriate care.

What Causes Diabetic Sores?

Diabetes can affect the body in several ways that make skin wounds harder to heal. Persistently high blood glucose can interfere with normal healing and the body's response to infection. Nerve damage, called diabetic neuropathy, may reduce sensation in the feet and legs, making it difficult to notice injuries.

Poor circulation can also limit the oxygen and nutrients reaching damaged tissue. As a result, even a minor wound may take longer to close. Pressure from footwear, friction, burns, and unnoticed cuts can contribute to skin breakdown.

Although diabetic sores commonly occur on the feet, they can develop elsewhere on the body. Their location and appearance depend on the underlying cause.

Common Signs and Symptoms

A sore may appear as a blister, crack, open wound, red patch, or area of discoloured skin. Other signs can include swelling, warmth, drainage, unpleasant odour, or surrounding tenderness.

Some people with diabetic neuropathy experience little pain despite having a significant wound. This makes regular skin checks especially important. Do not assume that a painless sore is safe to ignore.

Contact a healthcare professional promptly if you notice a new wound, particularly on your foot. Seek urgent medical care if redness spreads, pus develops, the skin turns black, swelling increases rapidly, or you develop a fever. A cold, pale, blue, or unusually discoloured foot may indicate a circulation emergency.

How Are Diabetic Sores Treated?

Treatment depends on the wound's size, depth, location, circulation, and whether infection is present. A healthcare professional may clean and dress the area, assess the surrounding skin, and recommend ways to reduce pressure. Additional treatment may be necessary for infection or poor blood flow.

People with diabetes should avoid cutting away damaged skin or attempting to drain a sore themselves. Do not use strong chemicals, unverified home remedies, or over-the-counter corn treatments on a wound without professional advice.

Good blood glucose management can support healing, but it does not replace wound treatment. Your clinician may review your diabetes medicines, circulation, nutrition, and other factors that affect recovery.

Daily Prevention Tips

Check your skin every day, especially your feet, heels, toes, and areas where shoes rub. Use a mirror or ask someone to help inspect areas that are difficult to see.

Wash gently and dry your skin carefully. Apply moisturiser to dry areas, but avoid leaving excess moisture between the toes. Wear clean socks and properly fitting footwear. Avoid walking barefoot and take care when using hot water or heating devices if sensation is reduced.

Attend regular diabetes and foot-care appointments. A podiatrist or other qualified professional can help manage foot problems safely and identify risks before a wound develops.

When to Seek Professional Advice

Diabetic sores should be taken seriously because complications may develop before obvious pain appears. Prompt assessment can help identify infection, circulation problems, and the need for specialised wound care.

If you have diabetes and notice a new or non-healing sore, arrange medical evaluation rather than waiting for it to improve. Early care, daily checks, and an appropriate diabetes management plan can help protect skin health and reduce the risk of serious complications.
