How to Do It 

Fortunately, dampening vibration in a crossbow is relatively simple and straightforward. Here are our top 4 suggestions. 

• Install limb dampeners. Limb dampeners are easy to install and will significantly reduce vibration in your crossbow, especially if you have a split-limb compound. There are two main types; adhesive dampeners and those that are intended to be mounted between split limbs and held in place with friction alone. Adhesive models should be applied to the backs of the crossbow limbs (facing you when it’s mounted) a little less than ⅔ of the way towards the limb tips. The same goes for those that are intended to be slipped between split limb models. Simply insert the dampeners about ⅔ of the way towards the limb tip, turn 90 degrees to secure them in place, and adjust as needed at the range.
• Install string silencers. String silencers can also go a long way towards dampening vibration and noise in a crossbow, but there are many different types. Traditionally, beaver hair or wool silencers have been used, but most modern silencers are made of rubber. Some are made of stranded rubber and intended to be tied around the bowstring, others are made of solid rubber and twisted around the string. Either way, install them roughly halfway towards the limb tips, perhaps a little bit further towards the tips. Silencers will reduce the FPS of your bow slightly, but they will absorb a great deal of vibration and noise. 
• Shoot a heavier bolt. Shooting a heavier bolt will also make your crossbow shoot a little more slowly, and the bolt will drop slightly faster, but the tradeoff is that the mass of the bolt will absorb a little vibration and therefore make the bow a little quieter, so the concession is worth it more often than it isn’t.
• Tighten all hardware (this one is really only applicable to compound crossbows). For recurve shooters this is really not a practical suggestion, but making sure that all the hardware is tight on your crossbow will also reduce vibration and also stress on the bow while you’re shooting.

Why Dampen Vibration in the First Place?

You might be wondering why it’s worth it to go through all this trouble, but modifying your crossbow so that it better absorbs vibration is one of the best things you can do to improve its performance: 

• Dampening the bow will reduce vibration, which puts a lot of stress on the bow and decreases string and limb life, and in the case of compound models, cable life.
• Decreasing vibration reduces noise, which makes the bow shoot more discreetly and reduces the chances of a game animal jumping the string when fired upon.
• Some practices, like shooting a heavier bolt and periodically checking all crossbow hardware will improve performance and longevity by reducing the stresses incurred on the bow while shooting.
