What Types of Name Changes Are Allowed?

United Airlines distinguishes between correcting a passenger’s existing name and transferring a ticket to another person. Minor corrections, such as fixing a typographical error or adjusting a middle name, may be permitted when the request meets the airline’s requirements. A legal name change following marriage, divorce, or another legal process may require supporting documents.

Tickets are generally non-transferable, meaning you cannot simply replace your name with an entirely different passenger’s name. The airline must review the circumstances before confirming whether a correction can be made.

How do I change my last name on my United Airlines account?

If your surname has changed legally, start by reviewing your MileagePlus account information and contacting United Airlines through its official website or customer service. Explain whether the update concerns your frequent-flyer profile, an existing reservation, or both, because these may require separate steps.

Prepare relevant documentation, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order, if requested. Make sure your updated information matches the government-issued identification you will use for travel. If you already have a ticket, do not assume that changing your account automatically updates the reservation. Ask United to confirm the correction and whether a ticket reissue is necessary.

Does United Airlines Charge a Name Correction Fee?

The United airlines name change fee depends on the type of correction, ticket conditions, and circumstances of the request. Simple spelling corrections may be handled without an additional charge when they qualify under the airline’s rules. More complicated cases may require further review, documentation, or ticket reissuance.

There is no single fee that safely applies to every situation. Contact United before paying a third party or accepting a new booking. Ask whether the requested correction involves a service charge, a fare difference, or another ticketing expense.

What Should You Know About Ticket Name Change Costs?

The United airlines ticket name change fee is not necessarily the same for every passenger or itinerary. A correction to an existing passenger’s details differs from purchasing a new ticket or trying to transfer a reservation. Partner-airline flights and international itineraries may also involve additional restrictions.

To avoid unnecessary expenses, review your confirmation email and compare the ticket details with your passport or government-issued ID. If you notice an error, request help as early as possible, preferably before check-in opens. Early action gives the airline more time to review your documents and explain the available options.

How Can You Check Your Request Status?

After submitting a correction request, keep your confirmation number, ticket number, and any case reference available. You can contact United through its official support channels to ask whether the change has been processed and whether further documentation is required.

Checking your United airlines name change status before departure is important because submitting a request does not necessarily mean your ticket has been updated. Review your revised itinerary carefully, including the passenger name, flight dates, and ticket details. If anything remains incorrect, contact the airline before heading to the airport.

Practical Tips to Avoid Name Problems

Enter your name exactly as required by the airline and ensure it corresponds appropriately with your travel identification. Review the spelling immediately after booking, especially when using mobile devices or third-party travel websites. Save your booking confirmation and any written communication about a correction.

If you booked through a travel agency, ask the agency whether it must handle the request. For complex itineraries, clarify which airline controls the ticket before making changes.
