India’s solar energy journey is entering an exciting new phase. From installing solar power projects across the country to building the manufacturing capabilities needed to produce solar cells and modules domestically, the nation is steadily strengthening its position in the global clean energy landscape. The latest manufacturing figures offer plenty of reason for optimism: India’s cumulative solar cell manufacturing capacity reached 36.6 GW as of June 2026, marking another important step towards a stronger domestic solar ecosystem.

The country added 50.6 GW of solar module manufacturing capacity and 9.7 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity in the first half of 2026. These developments point towards a future in which India can increasingly support its growing solar power ambitions through domestic manufacturing.

India's Solar Manufacturing Capacity Gains Momentum

India's manufacturing expansion is significant not just for its scale but also for the opportunities it creates across the clean energy value chain.

As of June 2026, the country's cumulative solar module manufacturing capacity stood at 261.7 GW, while solar cell manufacturing capacity reached 36.6 GW. Of this total, module capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-I stood at 225.5 GW, while cell capacity under ALMM List-II was nearly 35.5 GW.

These figures reflect the growing depth of India's solar manufacturing ecosystem. Greater domestic production capabilities can help strengthen supply chains, support industrial development, and create opportunities for businesses participating in the country's energy transition.

The continued growth of solar cell and module manufacturing also highlights how India is working to build capabilities across different stages of solar technology production, rather than focusing solely on installing finished products.

Gujarat Leads, While Other States Build Their Capabilities

India's solar manufacturing growth is also creating important regional opportunities. Gujarat remained the leading destination for solar module manufacturing, accounting for nearly 45% of cumulative capacity as of June 2026. Rajasthan followed with 26.1 GW, while Tamil Nadu recorded 23.4 GW.

Gujarat also accounted for 37% of the country's annual solar cell production capacity. Tamil Nadu and Telangana were among the other prominent states, with solar cell manufacturing capacities of 4.3 GW and 4.2 GW, respectively.

Meanwhile, Odisha is emerging as another promising destination for renewable energy manufacturing. Its policy incentives, land availability, and port connectivity offer advantages for industrial development and supply chain expansion.

The inauguration of the integrated solar cell and module facility developed by Jupiter and AMPIN Energy Transition in Bhubaneswar adds to this momentum. The facility is expected to strengthen Odisha's role in India's solar manufacturing ecosystem while contributing to regional employment and industrial growth.

AMPIN Energy Transition: Contributing to India's Solar Future

The expansion of domestic manufacturing creates opportunities for companies to contribute beyond renewable power generation. AMPIN Energy Transition's involvement in solar cell and module manufacturing reflects this broader shift towards strengthening India's clean energy capabilities.

With its integrated manufacturing facility in Bhubaneswar, the company is contributing to an ecosystem that connects industrial development with the country's growing demand for renewable electricity.

For it, this manufacturing push complements its wider renewable energy development activities. A stronger domestic manufacturing base can support the growth of solar installations, while the expansion of renewable power projects creates demand for reliable solar equipment.

This connection between manufacturing and deployment will be important as India continues to scale its clean energy infrastructure.

What Lies Ahead for India's Solar Industry?

The coming years could bring further opportunities for solar panel manufacturing companies as India expands its manufacturing capacity and renewable energy infrastructure. However, sustained progress will depend on factors such as technological advancement, efficient supply chains, product quality, and the ability to compete in global markets.

Continued investment in manufacturing facilities, skilled talent, and innovation will help determine how effectively India translates capacity growth into long-term industrial strength.

Building a Brighter Future, One Solar Cell at a Time

India's 36.6 GW solar cell manufacturing milestone is more than a capacity figure. It represents growing domestic capabilities, emerging industrial hubs, and new possibilities for the country's clean energy future.

With initiatives such as the AMPIN Solar One, an AMPIN-Jupiter Venture in Odisha, the manufacturing landscape is expanding beyond established centres and creating fresh opportunities for regional development.

As manufacturing and renewable power generation advance together, India is building the foundations for a more resilient solar ecosystem. The journey is far from over, but the direction is encouraging: a future where more of the technology powering India's clean energy transition can be made right here at home.
