Jio IPO for Reliance Shareholders: Reserved Quota and the Holding Company Discount
What the Jio IPO means for Reliance Industries shareholders, including the Rs 2,500 crore reserved quota and the holding company discount.
If you already own Reliance Industries, the Jio IPO touches your portfolio in two ways.
The reserved quota
Reliance shareholders received a reserved portion of Rs 2,500 crore in the issue, and employees a portion of Rs 500 crore. Final subscription of the shareholder category was reported at roughly 7.6 times .
Ownership
Reliance Industries owns 66.43 per cent of Jio Platforms before the issue. Because this is a fresh issue, the stake will dilute slightly .
The holding company discount
Nuvama warned that gains for Reliance shareholders could be smaller than expected because of the holding company discount, which is the market's habit of valuing a group at less than the sum of its parts.
Why it exists
- Investors prefer to own businesses directly.
- Complexity and cross-holdings reduce valuations.
- Cash may be trapped inside subsidiaries.
What a listing can change
A listed Jio gives a transparent market price for the business, which can help investors value the parent. It can also expose the gap between the market value and the parent's own valuation.
What to consider
Your decision as a shareholder is separate from the IPO. Think about portfolio concentration, since you already have exposure through Reliance.
