What Are Agricultural Commodities in Trading? A Plain-English Guide

Wheat, rice, corn, sugar, coffee, and cattle all sit on trading screens and in warehouse ledgers around the world. Their prices move every day, and those moves reach your grocery bill. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 136.0 points in September 2026, and cereal prices stood 17.2% above a year earlier. It was the third monthly rise in a row.

If you wonder how agricultural commodities in trading actually work, this guide gives you the short version. You will learn what counts as one, how people trade them, what moves prices, and where the risks hide. This article is educational and is not financial advice. Let’s break it down.

What Are Agricultural Commodities in Trading? (Quick Answer)

Agricultural commodities are farm-grown or farm-raised goods that buyers treat as interchangeable within their class. One ton of grade-two wheat is much like any other ton of grade-two wheat. That sameness lets people trade them in bulk, by contract, mostly on price.

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission describes them as goods that come from living organisms, are largely fungible within their class, and serve as food, shelter, animal feed, or natural fiber.

Common examples include:

  • Grains: wheat, corn, rice, barley

  • Oilseeds and oils: soybeans, mustard seed, palm oil

  • Softs: coffee, cocoa, sugar, cotton

  • Livestock and dairy: cattle, hogs, milk powder

  • Pulses and spices: chana, moong, cumin, pepper

The Main Types of Agricultural Commodities

Traders sort these goods into a few families. Here is the usual split.

Grains and Cereals

Grains are the staples. They rank among the most commonly traded agricultural and food exports. Wheat and corn set the tone for the group. Rice matters to billions of households, and FAO tracks a separate rice price index because rice trades differently from other cereals. Wheat climbed 6.3% in September 2026 to its highest level since August 2023.

Oilseeds and Vegetable Oils

Soybeans, mustard seed, sunflower seed, and palm fruit get crushed into meal and oil. The oil goes into cooking and packaged food. The meal goes into animal feed. FAO’s vegetable oil index averaged 198.6 points in September 2026, which was 18.3% above the level a year before.

Softs

Soft commodities include cocoa, coffee, cotton, orange juice, and sugar, and growers usually produce them in tropical regions. They respond sharply to weather in a handful of countries, so prices can jump on one bad harvest.

Livestock and Dairy

Livestock contracts cover cattle, hogs, and sheep. Meat and dairy prices follow feed costs, disease news, and consumer demand. They move more slowly than crop prices in most months.

Pulses and Spices

Pulses and spices trade on thinner exchange volumes than wheat or corn, so most deals happen as direct physical contracts between buyers and sellers. India ships a lot of these goods. Pulses exports rose 21.8% to $948.11 million in FY 2025-26.

How Agricultural Commodities Get Traded

There are three main ways to trade them. Each one fits a different goal.

Spot Market Trading

A spot trade settles now. The goods pass from seller to buyer right after both sides agree on a price. In India, this is the familiar mandi or ready market. Indian training material calls it the mandi, spot, or ready market. You see the price today and you take the goods today.

Forward Contracts

A forward contract fixes a price now for delivery later. A rice miller and an exporter might agree today on a price for cargo that ships in three months. Forward contracts usually end in physical delivery when they mature. Buyer and seller write the terms privately, so the contract can match the exact grade, quantity, and date. The trade-off is less flexibility if plans change.
