The backfield will be led by Jonathan Taylor, but it seems there's a player making a strong push for the role as his backup. With minicamp now behind us, ESPN reporters named the players who were surprise standouts during the offseason workouts. That honor, from , was bestowed upon Colts running back Trey Sermon. With no clear replacement for Zack Mo s after his departure in free agency, it remains to be seen who will ascend to the No. 2 Jacob Borcila Jersey RB spot behind Jonathan Taylor. For now, the likeliest option appears to be Sermon, whose hard-running style has earned him first crack at the job. Sermon is on his third team in four seasons, but this is the closest he has come to establishing some consistency in his career. He averaged 4.6 yards per attempt last season, but fellow backups Evan Hull and Tyler Goodson will certainly be factors in this competition. It will be interesting to see how this competition shakes out. Even though it's not for a starting role, there will be plenty of eyes on the battle for the change-of-pace role.MORE: Taylor is going to take the majority of touches in the backfield. There's no denying that. The combination of him and Anthony Richardson in Shane Steichen's RPO-heavy scheme has the potential to be lethal. However, Sermon showed some upside down the stretch with the Colts in 2023. The biggest questions will surround his abilities as a pa s-catcher and his special teams contributions. Sermon, historically, doesn't boast a skill set for either.Still, the former third-round pick is coming off a solid spring and will be a player to watch during training camp. For the best and latest Indianapolis Colts news and analysis, check out ourevery day.
