Compressing Refrigerant: How the Automotive Electric Scroll Compressors Market Cools Electric Vehicles

According to WiseGuy Reports, the global Automotive electric scroll compressors market is projected to grow from USD 2.81 billion in 2025 to USD 8 billion by 2035, expanding at a compound annual growth rate of 11 percent. This growth reflects a fundamental challenge of electric vehicles: without an engine to drive the air conditioning compressor, EVs must use electric compressors, and scroll compressors have emerged as the preferred technology because of their efficiency, quiet operation, and compact design.

The function of an electric scroll compressor is to circulate refrigerant through the air conditioning system, compressing it so that it can reject heat through the condenser and absorb heat from the cabin through the evaporator. Scroll compressors use two interlocking spiral scrolls, one fixed and one orbiting, to compress refrigerant continuously rather than in pulses. This design offers smooth operation, high efficiency, and fewer moving parts than piston compressors, making it well suited to the demands of electric vehicles.

The application segmentation shows where electric scroll compressors deliver value. Air conditioning represents the largest application, valued at approximately USD 1,680 million in 2024 and projected to reach USD 4,800 million by 2035, because cabin cooling is essential for comfort and, in EVs, for battery thermal management. Refrigeration applications use compressors to cool cargo in electric commercial vehicles. Heat pump applications use compressors in reverse to warm cabins efficiently, extending EV range in cold weather.

The type segmentation captures the compressor designs available. Variable speed compressors dominate because they can adjust output to match cooling demand, improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption that would otherwise drain the battery. Fixed speed compressors offer simpler, lower-cost solutions for applications where variable output is not required.

The end use vehicle type segmentation reveals how compressors serve different categories. Passenger cars represent the largest segment, as every electric car requires air conditioning. Light commercial vehicles use compressors for driver comfort and cargo cooling. Heavy commercial vehicles require robust compressors that handle demanding duty cycles.

The mode of operation segmentation shows how compressors are integrated. Standalone compressors operate independently of other systems. Integrated compressors combine the compressor with other thermal management components, improving efficiency and reducing weight, and increasingly favored in modern EV architectures.

Regional dynamics show North America leading with a market value around USD 840 million in 2024, projected to reach USD 2,500 million by 2035, supported by EV adoption. Europe follows with stringent regulations and EV incentives. The Asia-Pacific region is projected to reach USD 3,000 million by 2035, as EV production expands in China and as manufacturers localize compressor production.

The competitive landscape includes Mitsubishi Electric, Sanden, Hanon Systems, Bosch, LG Electronics, Sunrise, Denso, Valeo, Hitachi, Panasonic, Continental, and Mahle. Recent industry developments show the sector's momentum: Bosch partnered with LG Electronics to co-develop next-generation electric scroll compressors for BEV climate modules, Denso acquired Sunrise Mechanical's compressor division to expand capacity, and Valeo launched an electric scroll compressor with integrated inverter for next-generation BEVs.

Challenges include the energy consumption of air conditioning, which reduces EV range; the need for compressors that operate efficiently across temperature extremes; and the need to support heat pump operation that warms cabins in cold weather. Looking forward, electric scroll compressors will become more efficient, using variable speed and integrated inverters to minimize energy consumption, and will integrate with vehicle thermal management systems that optimize battery and cabin temperatures together.
